In March we went to Colorado for spring break. On the last day of our trip everything went crazy and we ended up driving straight back getting home in the early hours of the morning. The world literally changed overnight for us. COVID-19 was here.
We had watched it come. We knew it wasn’t going to be long before it arrived. We decided not to book the cruise we had planned for spring break. (THANK GOODNESS!) We opted to drive instead of flying anywhere so we headed to Colorado. We didn’t book anything until the day before we started driving after checking to see if Colorado had any cases. At that point we only knew of the people that were sent to the Air Force base here in San Antonio to quarantine from cruise ships.
On our second day in Colorado we saw the first report of a case there. In Estes Park we like to stay in an awesome place with it’s own kitchen. That day we went to the grocery store and stocked up on snacks. A few days later their shelves were bare. The next day we decided to drive straight home. I’m still surprised at how well the kids do in the car during road trips but can’t handle a 10 minute drive to the store. We got home at 4 am and pretty much haven’t left since.
Jace never went back to school after spring break. I’ve only been to the actual store a handful of times. We curbside and get everything delivered. Jace finished 1st grade online and is now 4 month into distance learning 2nd grade. Last month after over 200 days quarantining we visited some of our family for 2 days. It’s a weird feeling not hugging your mom and dad for over half a year and not knowing when you will be able to again. It’s a darkness that is hard to shake. We were hoping to visit for Thanksgiving but with the cases spiking again here in Texas it’s not likely.
There are some plus sides. We are about halfway done with remodeling our bathroom. We replaced half our fence. I don’t have to spend 2 hours in the car dropping off and picking up Jace from school. Since Jace hasn’t been in the germ fest of elementary school the only thing we have gotten is allergies. I think we passed around strep 3 times last year and a couple of tummy bugs. We have more movies nights and lots of snuggles. These are what I’m trying to hang onto while we wait for safer days.
